In a shopping mall in Wuhan, a 1-year-old boy accidentally fell on the escalator and his little hand was pierced by a comb board, and his finger got stuck in the gap. After receiving treatment at Wuhan Children's Hospital, a multidisciplinary joint consultation was immediately initiated to arrange emergency surgery for the child, finally rescuing the finger.
A one year old baby boy named Sheng Sheng (pseudonym) lives in Hankou. On the morning of the 25th, his grandmother took him to a shopping mall for a leisurely stroll, and the little guy was jumping and jumping happily. While on the escalator, Sheng Sheng accidentally fell and propped his small hand on the ground, and immediately burst into tears. Grandma saw a burst of cold sweat, and the little grandson's left little finger pierced through the sharp metal protrusion of the elevator. His finger got stuck in the gap and couldn't move, and his mouth was also injured. The mall staff stopped the elevator upon hearing the news and removed the elevator components connected to the elevator handle. They urgently rushed the child to Wuhan Children's Hospital and contacted the fire department. At around 11:30 am, Sheng Sheng was sent to the emergency department. After receiving the patient, emergency surgeon Yang Chunlei immediately initiated a multidisciplinary joint diagnosis and treatment (MDT) to further clarify the condition of the patient. He also initiated a joint consultation with doctors from multiple disciplines such as dentistry, emergency internal medicine, and orthopedics. Preliminary examination confirmed that there was no major issue with the raised mouth, but the middle section of the little finger was punctured and the metal passed through the child's bone. Firefighters also rushed to the hospital, but because the metal that pierced the child's finger was very small in area, if cut with tools, the tools would vibrate and quickly conduct heat, which may cause secondary injury. After the consultation, the doctors provided a solution: abandon using firefighting tools for cutting, immediately prepare for surgery, and remove foreign objects.
In order to help the child receive treatment as soon as possible, Director Cai Xiaofang of the Emergency Department opened a green channel for the child to quickly complete preoperative examinations such as electrocardiogram and chest X-ray, and limited arrangements were made for hospitalization procedures. Young Sheng Sheng has been crying in pain. In order to comfort the child and avoid emotional fluctuations interfering with the examination results, the emergency department nurse has been soothing Sheng Sheng in a soft voice and diverting his attention with Peppa Pig's toy.
Afterwards, the emergency department medical staff escorted the patient up to the operating room of the surgical building. After completing relevant examinations and anesthesia, the surgery began at 12:40 am, and the metal foreign body was successfully extracted by Deputy Chief Physician Yu Lisong and Dr. Xu Zhao from the Orthopedics Department. However, because the subcutaneous soft tissue, tendons, blood vessels, nerves, and bones of the raised little finger are twisted, even after smooth connection, it may have a certain impact on the child's future interphalangeal joint flexion and extension, finger sensation, and rehabilitation training is still needed in the future.
Journalists have found that reports of elevator injuries are already common, including baby strollers falling, holding children falling, children climbing handrails, clothes and shoes, and fingers (toes) being pinched. Experts remind that the correct posture for taking a child on the escalator is for an adult to hold onto the handrail with one hand and hold the child with the other, ensuring that the child's entire body is within the yellow line. Usually, parents should educate their children that elevators are not toys, and they should not play around while riding them. When parents are taking care of their children, it is advisable to choose to take a straight elevator as much as possible. If there is no vertical ladder, do not let children out of their sight. Due to the fact that escalators are a series of steps that vary between flat surfaces and steps, if clothing or soft shoes accidentally get stuck by the steps, people may also be taken away. If wearing soft shoes or long skirts, be especially careful not to touch the ground when taking the elevator. Once an accident occurs, try not to tear it to avoid secondary injury.
